Introducing WMPtunelog

Posted on January 12, 2004 | 7 comments

WMPtunelog is a plugin for iTunes in the same vein as my Winamp 2 and Winamp 3 plugins. Keep reading for more information as well as downloading instructions.

Current Version: 1.0

Download: WMPtunelog_1_0.exe (320kb)

Update: Do you use Movable Type and Windows? Check out my posting client (which also supports this plugin) at http://www.zempt.com

You must exit and restart iTunes before the plugin is activated.

Q. Why would I find WMPtunelog useful?
A. If you use a blogging client that supports the WMP 9 Series Blogging Plug-In but use iTunes more than Windows Media player, you may find this plugin useful.

Q. What is the WMP 9 Series Blogging Plug-In?
A. This is a plugin that stores data from a song you play, allowing blogging clients to pull that information into a post. For example, in w.bloggar you can simply click on a link to insert the currently playing song information into a post. With this plugin, you can use either Windows Media Player 9 or iTunes.

Q. How do I install the plugin?
To install the plugin, make sure you have iTunes installed. Click the download link and follow the installation instructions.

Q. How do I uninstall the plugin?
Delete currentlyplaying.dll from your program files/iTunes/Plug-ins/ directory.

Q. What operating system does this work on?
I use XP Pro and have not yet tested it on another operating systems. So I'm not sure.

Q. How exactly does WMPtunelog work?
When you play a song, the plugin records the following information into the registry.

  • "Title" - The title of the song. If not defined, then it will be set to the current file name.

  • "DurationString" - The running time of this track in the format %02d:%02d (ie minutes:seconds, both padded to two digits).

  • "Author" - The author the track, if defined. Otherwise this does not exist.

  • "Album" - The album of the track, if defined. Otherwise this does not exist.

When you stop playing, that information is deleted.

Q. You're the man!
I know, but that's not really a question.

The creators of the fantastic Zempt blogging tool has created a fantastic new plugin for iTunes for Windows, that lets you display what you're playing in blog posts. Minimal Verbosity introduces WMPtunelog; it is very simple to use and install.... (TrackBack from WMPtunelog For Windows iTunes)
